J.R.R. Tolkien emphasizes a theme in The Hobbit. The theme is anyone can be a hero. In the beginning of the book it talks about how Bilbo is just a short, fat hobbit. This makes the dwarfs mad at Gandalf for bringing him on the journey, but as the story progresses the hobbit turns into a hero killing gigantic hairy spiders and other evil creatures. I feel that Tolkien does this to show us that heroes are all around us.
